About Julie

I have been interested in art for as long as I can remember.  As a young girl I was obsessed with my mother’s art book collection, poring endlessly over images of the great Renaissance, Romantic and Impressionist painters.

I began studying in my childhood and my training and interest continued through my teenage years, through a brief career as an Army linguist living in Korea, and an even longer one as a graphic designer and communications manager for a science research laboratory in Boulder Colorado. I earned my BFA in Painting from Arizona State University. I am amazed to be alive during a time when we have so many living masters working and painting, and I am lucky enough to have studied with a few of them, including fellow Coloradans Quang Ho, Jeff Legg and Kim English.

So what does any of this have to do with primal living?

Absolutely nothing, come to think of it. Save for the fact that I am interested in both of these things, and they take up so much of my attention on a daily basis.  So it makes sense to have a blog about these two seemingly disparate subjects. We’ll see where it goes.

I started adopting a paleo lifestyle back in March. I was on the email list of Tony Horton (of P90X fame). He sent this random email about Mark Sisson’s new (at the time) book “The Primal Blueprint.” I hadn’t been in excellent shape and like most people was adrift in a sea of unworkable information about diet and exercise. I had zero understanding of all the other things that factor into human health – things like sleep, play, stress, creativity, etc. etc. I read his book and have never looked back, because looking forward was all of a sudden so much fun.

Lots of things have changed since then: I’m about 10 pounds lighter (without really “trying” – and it’s still coming off), I do Crossfit now and am getting stronger by the week, I sleep more deeply, I’m more at ease, I laugh more, I stress less, I think more clearly. And now I really, really enjoy cooking. Have I mentioned this is a fun and satisfying way to live? Most importantly to me personally, I enjoy painting more and have far more to give to that task than I ever have. It doesn’t get much better than that.
